What was the situation?
RV has been suffering with a mental health problem since 2005. His psychiatrist encouraged him to try volunteering in the Food Collective social supermarket at the Angel as he thought it may be helpful for him to get out into the community again.
What was the intervention?
He has learnt new skills including Barista training, stock rotation, organisation of deliveries, how to operate a till system, food displays and customer service training. He really enjoys volunteering as it gives him some adult time for himself.
What was the outcome?
Although RV was a little nervous to begin with, his confidence has been greatly improved. He would like to find a part time job role in the future as he feels he is suited to this type of employment and can no longer work in the area he did previously (building site) as he has a problem with his balance. He enjoys working with the public and enjoys conversing with the customers.
